Coping With The New Year’s Eve Blues: the youtube edition
If you are a regular WYG reader (and thank you if you are) you probably know that we like to keep our definition of coping broad around here. Very broad. There is no recipe or checklist for coping; what works for me may not work for you, what works for you may not work for me. That said, who doesn’t love a good YouTube video to cheer you up, make you laugh, make you cry, and make you smile?? Eleanor and I have both shared our tendency to turn to YouTube when life is dragging us down and we have a feeling that a few of you may be feeling a little down tonight. Because, let’s be honest, New Year’s Eve is a pretty rough holiday when you are missing a loved one. We hope you are off somewhere enjoying the evening, but if you’re not, don’t you worry. We have compiled some of our favorite cheer-you-up, make-you-smile, make-you-laugh YouTube videos all in one place to supplement your evening. 2016 is coming, whether we like it or not, so let’s all raise a glass to Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim and thank them for making YouTube a thing.
Okay, let’s start with an Honest Trailer. Why didn’t someone tell me these existed sooner? Seriously. Warning: once you watch one you may be sucked into watching fifty.
Moving on to some classics that Eleanor shared back when she was having a crappy Mother’s Day:
A gentleman named Chase Jarvis of the Chase Jarvis blog put together the 6 Best Orchestra Flashmobs. I’ll deny this if you tell anyone, but flahsmobs (the good ones) make me cry. There’s just something about them.
Of the 6 flashmobs Jarvis lists, the Ode to Joy and the Carmina Burana are the most impressive, but the Peer Gynt on the Metro (included below) is by far the most moving. The looks of joy and happiness on the passengers faces as they remove their headphones and turn inwards towards one another is beautiful beyond words. This video reminds me that some days you need only leave your house, cross the street, and board the subway train to stumble upon beauty.
Although we don’t know the context or background of this video, for some reason it needs no explanation. Here is the Free Hugs Campaign.
I am always a sucker for a movie montage. Here are 40 Inspirational Speeches in 2 Minutes from the silver screen.
The World is Just Awesome via Discovery
These videos are funny and cute.
Have you seen Jessica’s Daily Affirmation? 13, 170,637 people have, if your not one of them here it is.
Jimmy Kimmel challenged parents to pretend they ate all their children’s Halloween candy. There is a lot of crying in this video but it is still really funny. Please (oh please) watch to see the kids at minute 2:46.
Here a baby hysterically laughing at ripping paper. Why not?
OMGish….this is just….oh my so adorable.
Things I think are hilarious/make my husband roll his eyes at me.
Denver the dog is so guilty
Some of you are not going to get why this is funny, I don’t either but it still made me laugh so hard I cried. So random.
Okay, here are some of my favs that I shared when I was having a crappy Thanksgiving.
Maybe the Best Flash Mob Ever??
Why do flash mobs bring us so much joy? I have no idea. Maybe it is seeing the onlookers looks of ‘wtf’ quickly change to ‘holy crap this is amazing’. Maybe it is just the sheer good-time-ness of it all. Whatever the reason, I think they are amazing. When one broke out next to me at a street festival a couple years ago I could barely contain my excitement. This one is a classic and just makes me happy every time I watch it.
Facts to Make You Happy
I have been struggling with my daily gratitudes for the last week, but I have to say I am definitely grateful for buzzfeed and their random, amazing lists. If you are trying to find gratitude when you’re not feeling all that grateful, we did post some tips for that last week.
I already shared this on social media this week, but it made me happy enough that I am going to share it again. Because why not?
Blind Dog Rescued and Sees Again
I am a total sucker for rescue dogs and this video may officially be the sweetest thing ever.
Thanksgiving Family Flash Mob
If this isn’t the cutest family togetherness of Thanksgiving (at least that involves Journey) I don’t know what is.
Cliche Songs That Never Stop Making Me Happy . . .
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros: Home
Noah and the Whale: L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.

Sesame Street Musical Guests That Never Stop Making Me Happy
Within the category of Songs That Never Stop Making Me Happy lives this subcategory. I mean, how can these NOT make you happy?!?
A Tribute to Jim Davis
There are no words to introduce this. Either you think a youtube video of reviews of the two Garfield movies set to the Jurassic Park theme sounds brilliant or you don’t. If you don’t, sorry . . . keep it moving. Really. If you do, be prepared for amazingness.
Take A Seat-Make A Friend
I want a ballpit and new friend. ASAP.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Christmas Town
This might be my favorite Christmas movie ever.
Edward Scissorhands: Ice Dance Scene
The Nightmare Before Christmas is my favorite, unless you count Edward Scissorhands as a Christmas movie. Then maybe that’s my favorite. Have I mentioned I love Tim Burton?
Last but not least, who doesn’t love a bad lip-reading video of Game of Thrones?
Hope you find a few smiles this New Year’s Eve and make sure to share your favorite YouTube videos in the comments, because clearly this just wasn’t enough.
